> What is an "e-mail"?

↳ E-mail (abbreviation for electronic mail), is the transmission of electronic messages between computers via network. An e-mail allows users to exchange messages locally and globally. Email messages can contain text or attachments. The attachment could be a document, graphic file, audio file or video clips. Incoming and outgoing email messages are contained in a location in the mail server called the mailbox. Each mailbox has a specific address called the email address. Below is an example of an email address:

↳ E-mail uses two protocols: SMTP for sending email messages and POP for retrieving email messages from the mailbox. 

> What is an "Internet Relay Chat"?

↳ IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is an Internet tool which allows participants around the world to talk to each other in real time on hundreds of channels. These channels are usually based on a particular topic. To have access to IRC, you must use an IRC software program which will connect you to an IRC server and allows you to visit IRC channels. mIRC is one example of a chat program.

Chat programs are now common on the Web. They are sometimes included as a feature of a Website, where users can log into the chat room to exchange comments and information about topics addressed on the site. Yahoo Messenger is an example of this type

1. Avoid writing messages using all caps.
2. To add humor and personality to your messages, use smileys or emoticons. These are expressions that you can create from the characters on your keyboard.
3. Keep your communications to the point.
4. Remember that anything you post to a newsgroup or type into a chat session is a public comment.
5. Do not practice spamming, indiscriminately posting unrelated comments or worse advertisements.
6. If you post an ad to a newsgroup, or send it in an e-mail, clearly identify it in the subject line.
7. Keep messages short and use some common abbreviations.
