- world wide web -

> World Wide Web <
↳ (commonly known as the Web) is a collection of globally distributed text and multimedia documents and files and other network services linked in such a way as to create an immense electronic library. The Web represents the application of hypertext technology and graphical interface to the Internet in order to retrieve information that is contained in specifically formatted documents that may reside in the same computer or distributed across many computers around the world
The development of the Web was the key technology that popularized the Internet around the world. The Web is consists of three main elements
>Hypertext Markup Language :<
↳ or HTML is the basic language of Web.
>HyperText Transfer Protocol: <
↳ or HTTP is the protocol used for transmitting Web pages across the internet.
> Universal Resource Locator:<
↳ or URL is the standard naming convention for identifying a web document.
>Tim Berners-Lee:<
↳ Sir Tim Berners-Lee, dubbed as the "Father of the Web", conceived of and developed the Web with the help from Robert Cailliau and others at the nuclear physics laboratory known as the European Particle Physics Laboratory (also called CERN). According to Berners-Lee: "The original idea of the web was that it should be a collaborative space where you can communicate through sharing information. The idea that by writing something together, and as people worked on it, they could iron out misunderstanding."

In addition to Berners-Lee, the following people and organizations have influenced the development of the Web that we know today
>Ted Nelson:<
↳ discovered the concept of hypertext.
>Douglas Engelbart:<
↳ developed the mouse, the graphical user interface, and the first working hypertext system, NLS, which was also the second computer system connected to the ARPANET.
>The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center:<
>Marc Andreeseen:<
↳ and the NCSA National Center for Supercomputing Applications team developed MOSAIC, the first graphical web browser.
>Netscape:<
↳ built the first commercial web browser.
>The W3 Consortium:<
↳ oversees development of the web technology standards.
↳ was the first web site in North America, and helped establish the first web site in Asia.

> Browser:<
↳ developed the mouse, the graphical user interface, and the first working hypertext system, NLS, which was also the second computer system connected to the ARPANET.
> Using the Browser:<
↳ To use the browser, double-click on the Internet Explorer icon located at the Windows Desktop.
> Parts of the Internet Explorer window:<
1. Title bar
2. Minimize button
3. Maximize button
4. Close button

In addition to typing the URL on the address bar, one could also use the hyperlinks (or links - the mouse pointer changes from an arrow to a hand pointer whenever the mouse pointer was placed over a link.) or the following tools from the Internet Explorer toolbar:
>Button:<

>function:<
Goes to the previously viewed page.
Goes forward to the next page.
Stops loading a web page. This tool is helpful when the page takes too long to load.

Redisplay the current web page.
Displays the browser starting page.

> Search Engines:<
↳ A search engine is a computer program that helps users locate Web sites, Web pages and Internet files. It is particularly helpful if you do not know the address of the pages you are looking for. Some of the most common search engines are Yahoo and Google.
